OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A two-run homer by
sophomore Jessica Bandzwolek (Fallston/Fallston)
highlighted a four-run sixth inning and gave the Stevenson
University softball team a come-from-behind 5-3 victory in
game one of a non-conference doubleheader with Washington (Md.) on
Saturday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.
The win was the sixth-straight for the Mustangs (9-7) who
dropped game two in extra innings, 8-7.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Stevenson mounted a
four-run, two-out rally to capture its fourth consecutive win
at home.
Sophomore Michelle January (Baltimore/Eastern
Tech) led off the inning with a single up the middle
before back-to-back sacrifice bunts moved her to third. Junior
Stacey Rouse (Catonsville/Mount de Sales) singled
to right to score January.
Sophomore Laura Bedgar (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) tripled to score Rouse and tie the game
at 3-3 before Bandzwolek's third home run of the year gave the
Mustangs a 5-3 lead.
The Shorewomen (7-6) threatened in the top of the seventh with
runners on second and third with two outs, but sophomore
Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech)
retired Leigh Carbutt for the fourth time with a swinging
strikeout to end the game and preserve the win for Stevenson.
Roper allowed just five hits while striking out five to pick up
her team-leading fifth win of the season. Bandzwolek was 3-for-4
with two runs and two RBIs.
Game two had a lot of offense as there was 15 runs, 23 hits,
five errors and four lead changes.
It was also eerily similar to game one as the Mustangs scored
three runs with two outs in the bottom of the the sixth to
take a 5-3 lead after Washington scored three runs over
the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead.
The first three runs for the Shorewomen came on a solo home run
by Tori Ripple and passed ball in the second before Ripple picked
up her second RBI with a sacrifice fly to center in the third
scored Margaret Rohde.
Junior Stacey Rouse (Catonsville/Mount de
Sales) had an RBI double in the third and freshman
Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston) hit her second
home run in the fourth to pull Stevenson within one, 3-2.
The Mustangs tied the game on a passed ball that scored Bilski
in the sixth before freshman Mara DeLaus (Webster,
N.Y./Webster-Schroeder) gave them a two-run lead with a
two-run single up the middle that scored January and junior
Sarah Moelter (Timonium/Dulaney).
Washington responded with three runs in the top of the
seventh with the go-ahead run scoring on a passed ball.
However, Stevenson tied the game and forced extra
innings in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by
freshman Lauren Davis (Mechanicsville/Chopticon).
In the top of the eighth, the Shorewomen scored two runs,
including another one on a passed ball which proved to be the
game-winner.
Bilski and Moelter each finished the game 2-for-4 with Bilski
adding two runs and an RBI. Moelter also struck out four in
the circle, but suffered her third loss despite allowing
just four earned runs.
Stevenson returns to CAC play on Sunday when it hosts a
doubleheader with York (Pa.) beginning at 1:00 p.m.
