ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Junior Steve
Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) totaled four goals
and five points to lead the No. 3-ranked Stevenson University
men's lacrosse team to its first CAC victory of the season, 13-4
Wednesday afternoon over St. Mary's (Md.) at Seahawk Stadium.
It was the eighth consecutive regular season win for the
Mustangs (5-0, 1-0 CAC) and their third-straight in conference.
One more win will tie the school record for most consecutive
wins to start a season set by the 2007 squad that began the year
6-0 before losing at No. 8 Washington (Md.) on March 21, 10-5.
Kazimer has totaled 11 points over the last two games following
his two-goal, four-assist performance in Saturday's 16-7
victory at Ursinus.
Neither team got off to a fast start as the game was tied at 1-1
at the end of the first quarter after goals by Stevenson sophomore
Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin
East) and the Seahawks' Ryan Alexander.
Kazimer assisted on Moffitt's second goal of the season less
than five minutes in before Alexander countered just three minutes
later.
Stevenson would blow the game open over the next three periods,
outscoring St. Mary's 12-3 while outshooting the Seahawks, 41-19.
The Mustangs took 6-2 halftime lead following a five-goal second
quarter in which they held a 15-6 edge in shots and received
two goals from senior Chris Baldwin (Baltimore/Calvert
Hall) and one each from seniors Greg Furshman
(Miami, Fla./Towson) and Brett Yoder
(Parkton/Hereford).
Yoder finished the game with one goal and two assists while
Baldwin and Furshman totaled two goals each as nine different
players scored for the Mustangs.
Stevenson also held a 37-26 edge in ground balls led by five
each from junior Tyler Maguire (Montauk, N.Y./Whittier
College) and sophomore Evan Douglass (Exeter,
N.H./Exeter).
The Mustangs' starting defense of Douglass, senior Mike
Simon (Fallston/Fallston) and sophomore Ian Hart
(Chester, Pa./Ridley) combined for nine ground balls and
nine caused turnovers.
Junior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made
11 saves, one shy of his career-high of 12 set in a 9-7 win at
Stevens on February 28. He also had four ground balls.
Stevenson opens a four-game homestand on Saturday when it hosts
a CAC contest with Mary Washington beginning at 1:00 p.m.
