WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Nine different players
scored as the Stevenson University women's lacrosse team totaled a
season-high 22 goals and used an 8-1 run midway through the first
half to break open a tie game en route to a 22-11 victory over Ohio
Wesleyan Tuesday evening at Lake Lytal Park.
The Mustangs (3-1) outshot the Battling Bishops 48-23 while
forcing 20 turnovers and converting 10-of-17 free position shots.
Sophomore Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster)
led Stevenson offensively with three goals and two assists while
junior Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus)
totaled four goals.
Stevenson took a 2-0 lead in the game's first three minutes on
goals by Zegowitz and junior Kristyna Hnizda
(Manchester/North Carroll), but Ohio Wesleyan would tie
the game on back-to-back goals by Jessica Copeland just 1:25 apart.
With the score tied at 4-4 with 13:42 remaining in the first
half, the Mustangs would score eight of the next nine goals to take
a commanding 12-5 lead on Zegowitz's third goal of the game with
3:28 left.
Senior Mandi Carr (Crownsville/Old Mill) added
two goals during the run while Baker added a goal and an assist.
The Battling Bishops (1-1) would add three goals in the final
2:56 to cut the deficit to 12-8 at halftime.
However, Stevenson opened the second half by scoring six of the
first seven goals, including two from freshman Kelli
Battista (Elkridge/Long Reach) on free position shots to
push the lead to 18-9 with 13:50 remaining.
The Mustangs outscored Ohio Wesleyan 10-3 in the second half to
pick up their 10th win in the last 12 games dating back to last
season. The team's only losses during that time have both come
against No. 2 Salisbury.
Freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton
Keough) made six saves before giving way to sophomore
Devan Malone (Highland/River Hill) in the second
half.
Stevenson, who received votes in last week's IWLCA/Under Armour
Division III Weekly Poll, will wrap-up its two-game trip to Florida
on Thursday against Dickinson at 7:00 p.m. The Red Devils were
ranked at No. 17 in last week's IWLCA poll, but were receiving
votes this week.
