SALISBURY, Md. - The Stevenson University
women's lacrosse team outscored No. 3-ranked Salisbury 9-4 in the
second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 12-goal halftime
deficit as the Sea Gulls won their 52nd consecutive CAC contest,
18-11 Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
The win was also the 31st-straight win at home for Salisbury
(5-0, 3-0 CAC) who has outscored its opponents 101-26 this season.
Stevenson (2-1, 2-1 CAC) held a 13-11 edge in shots and
converted all three of its free position attempts in the second
half in its attempt to erase a 14-2 halftime deficit. The team also
had just seven turnovers and were 5-for-7 on clears after totaling
15 turnovers and going 5-for-11 clears in the first half.
The Mustangs' 11 goals were the most scored by a Salisbury
opponent this season and almost equaled the 15 the
team had surrendered in four previous games combined.
A year ago, Stevenson was outscored 44-9 in two games against
the Sea Gulls.
Sophomores Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster)
and junior Kristyna Hnizda (Manchester/North
Carroll) led the Mustangs' second half charge with
two goals each while senior Mandi Carr (Crownsville/Old
Mill) added one goal and one assist.
Baker finished with her third three-goal game of the season and
leads the team with 13 this season. Hnizda and junior
Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus), who is
second on the team with nine goals and 12 points,
each finished with two goals.
Zegowitz leads the team in assists with three as the Mustangs
have totaled just seven assists on 43 goals this season.
Freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton
Keough) had a career-high 11 saves, but allowed 16 goals
in just under 58 minutes.
Robyn Bishop led the Sea Gulls with four goals and six points
while Jessica Chmielewski added three goals and five points. Sonja
Stuart needed just three saves to pick up her fourth win of the
season.
Stevenson travels to Randolph-Macon on Friday for its first
non-conference contest this season. Game time is at 3:00 p.m.
