JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Stevenson University men's
volleyball senior J.R. Jackson (Havre de Grace/Havre de
Grace) and junior David Lloyd
(Germantown/Seneca Valley) were both named to the
All-Tournament Team at Gothic Knight Invitational where the
Mustangs went 2-1 to finish in second place.
Stevenson (5-4) opened the day with a five-game victory over
Wentworth 30-24, 28-30, 30-23, 27-30, 15-12 before sweeping host
New Jersey City 30-28, 30-25, 30-25.
In the championship match, the Mustangs dropped a 30-18, 30-25,
30-11 decision to No. 7-ranked Newbury. Three of Stevenson's four
losses this season have come to Baruch, Eastern Mennonite and
Newbury, all of whom are ranked nationally.
Jackson totaled a team-high 43 kills over the three matches,
averaging 4.30 kills per game while posting a .455 hitting
percentage. He also added seven digs and six total blocks.
Meanwhile, Lloyd totaled 28 kills, 16 digs, a
team-best seven blocks and five assists.
In the win against Wentworth, Jackson had a season-high 20
kills while hitting .581 and three total blocks. He was one of five
players who totaled 10 or more kills as sophomore Jason
Matkowski (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) had a
career-high 16.
Lloyd added 13, senior Ryan McDowell (Germantown/Seneca
Valley) 11, one short of his career-high, and senior
Steve Grossnickle (Perry Hall/Calvert Hall) had
10.
Lloyd and Matkowski each added 15 digs for the team's first
double double performances of the season. Freshman Dean
Massimini (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township)
totaled a career-high 35 assists with senior Anthony
Cammarata (Fallston/Calvert Hall) adding 27.
Stevenson totaled 47 kills and a .411 hitting percentage in
games one, three and five compared to 30 kills, but a .155 hitting
percentage in the two games the team lost.
Against New Jersey City, the Mustangs hit .320 as a team and
were led by Jackson's 12 kills and Lloyd's 11. Massimini added 37
more assists while Grossnickle totaled 11 digs.
In the championship match versus Newbury, Stevenson hit just
.120 as the Nighthawks had 13 total blocks. Jackson had 11 kills
and Massimini 31 assists while Grossnickle and Cammarata each had a
team-best six digs.
Massimini finished the day with 103 assists over the three
matches.
Stevenson travel to No. 9-ranked Philadelphia Biblical on
Wednesday.
