STEVENSON, Md. - Cody Kennedy totaled a
match-high 12 kills to lead No. 7-ranked Eastern Mennonite who hit
.326 and took advantage of 40 errors en route to a 3-0 victory over
the Stevenson University men's volleyball team Tuesday night in a
NECVA Western Division contest at Carolyn Manuszek Student Union
Gymnasium.
The Royals (5-2, 2-0 NECVA West), who moved up to seventh in the
NECVA Top 10 Poll and to No. 12 in the Bison/AVCA Division III
Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, won with game scores of 30-23, 30-22 and
30-25. They also had 10 total blocks as the Mustangs posted a
.198 hitting percentage.
Junior David Lloyd (Germantown/Seneca Valley)
and sophomore Jason Matkowski (Warminster, Pa./William
Tennent) each had a team-high 10 kills, but combined for
14 of the team's 21 attack errors.
After dropping the first game, Stevenson (3-3, 1-1 NECVA West)
had its best chance to take a victory in the second as there were
14 ties and seven lead changes. However, with the game tied at
21-21, Eastern Mennonite scored nine of the final 10 points,
including seven on Mustang errors.
Four of the Royals' final 10 points came on Stevenson reception
errors and three were by attack errors. Another point was
on a ball handling error.
Eastern Mennonite took a seven-point lead at 20-13 in the third
game and never let it slip below three en route to a
five-point win.
Senior J.R. Jackson (Havre de Grace/Havre de
Grace) added nine kills and hit .313 in increasing
his school record for career kills to 1,170. Senior
Steve Grossnickle (Perry Hall/Calvert Hall) had
seven kills and nine digs to finish just shy of a double double.
Prior to the match, Jackson and Grossnickle were honored for
surpassing 1,000 career kills and 500 career digs. Grossnickle now
has 566 in his career, just 85 shy of assistant coach Alex
Ness' school record of 651.
Senior Anthony Cammarata (Fallston/Calvert
Hall) finished with 31 assists and six digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday at the Gothic Knight
Invitational against Wentworth and New Jersey City.
