OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Junior Lauren
Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus) and sophomore
Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster) combined
for 10 goals and 13 points as the Stevenson University
women's lacrosse team won its sixth-straight at home, 17-9 over
York (Pa.) in a CAC contest Wednesday at Caves Athletics Complex.
The Mustangs (2-0, 2-0 CAC) had twice as many shots
as the Spartans while scoring on six of their 10 free position
attempts.
Six different players combined to score Stevenson's nine
first half goals, led by three from Zegowitz and two from
Baker. Freshman Kristin Gancarz (Crownsville/Old
Mill) and senior Mandi Carr (Crownsville/Old
Mill) also added their first goals of the year
in the opening half as the Mustangs managed a slim
9-5 lead at halftime.
Baker, who finished the game with a career-high six goals and
seven points, had a hand in Stevenson's first three goals of the
second half as the Mustangs scored the first five of the half in
pushing its lead to nine, 14-5 with 12:53 remaining.
Baker opened the half with her third goal at 24:17 before
assisting sophomore Megan Weiss
(Odenton/Seton) at 17:53 and netting her
fourth with 15:07 left on a free position.
Zegowitz followed with her fourth goal on a free position at
13:42 before Weiss scored her third goal with 12:53 to play.
York (0-2, 0-1 CAC) tried to make things interesting by scoring
three of the game's next four goals, including two by Kelly Vrana,
but Baker added two more goals in the final 5:10 to end any threat
of a Spartan comeback.
Zegowitz finished with four goals and two assists for a total of
six points while Weiss added three goals and Carr two.
In goal, freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton
Keough) made six saves, including four in the second half,
in picking up her second victory in as many starts.
2008 All-Metro Region and All-CAC First Team selection Anne
Feustle made 10 saves for York who had 18 turnovers and was just
1-for-6 on free position attempts.
Stevenson will face its first big test of the season on Sunday
when it travels to No. 3-ranked Salisbury. In two games last
season, the Sea Gulls outscored the Mustangs, 44-9. Game time is at
1:00 p.m.
