EMMITTSBURG, Md. - Stevenson University
men's basketball sophomore guard Broderick Hill
(Largo/Bishop McNamara) scored a career-high 16 points,
but the Mustangs could not overcome a 13-point halftime deficit as
Hood edged out a 92-81 victory Wednesday night at Knott Arena on
the campus of Mount St. Mary's.
The loss was the third-straight for Stevenson (6-18, 5-10 CAC)
who has one final shot at advancing to the CAC Men's
Basketball Championship on Saturday, but whose destiny is out of
their hands.
Meanwhile, Hood (9-15, 6-9 CAC) remained in a tie for
the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament with York
(Pa.) after the Spartans beat Gallaudet at home Wednesday night,
77-62.
If the Mustangs are going to back their way into the CAC Men's
Basketball Championship, they will need to beat Mary Washington on
the road Saturday and hope for losses by both Hood and York. This
would create a three-way tie for the final spot with Stevenson
winning the tiebreaker between the three schools which would be the
head-to-head records of the three against each other.
In this scenario, the Mustangs would be 3-1 (2-0 vs. York, 1-1
vs. Hood) while York would be 2-2 (2-0 vs. Hood, 0-2 vs. Stevenson)
and Hood would be 1-3 (1-1 vs. Stevenson, 0-2 vs. York).
York hosts Marymount (Va.) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and Hood
travels to Salisbury for a 4:00 p.m., tipoff.
As for Wednesday night, Hood took a 46-33 halftime lead after
shooting 58.1 percent from the floor in the first half. The damage
could have been worse if not for the Blazers' 5-for-11 performance
at the free throw line.
Stevenson received 15 of its 33 points off the bench in the
form of seven from Hill and eight from sophomore guard Greg
Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech).
The Mustangs trailed by as many as 17 in the second half before
a 9-0 run cut their deficit to just six, 76-70 with 3:43 remaining.
With the lead still at six with 1:58 remaining, Hood pulled away
for its third-straight win by hitting six of its final eight free
throw attempts.
Hill also added five assists and was one of four
players in double figures for Stevenson, led by 18 points from
senior guard Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint
Joseph). Senior center Kerry Dugan
(Sparks/Hereford) totaled his seventh double double of the
season with 12 points and 14 rebounds while Collins finished with
12.
The Blazers, who scored 22 of their 46 second half points from
the free throw line where they went 22-of-28, had six players
in double figures, led by 20 from J'Air Brady.
Tipoff between Stevenson and Mary Washington is set for 2:00
