ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - St. Mary's (Md.) scored
31 points off of 27 Stevenson tunrovers, including 16 in the first
half as the Seahawks won just their second game in seven this
season with a 64-53 victory Saturday at Arc Arena.
Junior guard JaQuelia Conley (Columbia/Montrose
Christian) led the Mustangs (1-6, 0-2 CAC) with 15 points,
two shy of her career-high set at Penn State Berks last Saturday.
Junior forward Kristen Steiner (Fallston/Fallston)
finished with eight points, nine rebounds and four steals.
Stevenson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 48 seconds on a
three-pointer from Conley and a lay-up by sophomore Amanda
Craig (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) before a 9-2 run by
St. Mary's gave the Seahawks their first lead on a jumper by Alex
Wenger at 15:40.
Another three-pointer by Conley gave the Mustangs a 10-9 lead
and back-to-back baskets by junior forward Jasmine Jarrett
(Woodstock/Mount Hebron) and sophomore forward
Daniela Poss (Brookeville/Good Counsel) increased
the lead to three, 14-11 with 13:24 left in the opening half.
However, a three-pointer by Pul Sham and a three-point play by
Jamie Roberts gave St. Mary's a three-point advantage at 9:11 and
the team would never trail again.
The Seahawks held a six-point advantage at the break, 31-25, and
led by as many as 13 en route to their second win in the last three
games after starting the season with four-straight losses.
Craig totaled six points, five rebounds and seven assists for
the Mustangs, but had nine turnovers. Poss had seven points and
four rebounds.
Shum led St. Mary's (2-5, 1-1 CAC) with a game-high 22 points,
18 of which came on six three-pointers while Steph Saint-Aubin had
14 points and 10 rebounds. Roberts added 10 points and four steals
and Wenger had eight points and nine rebounds.
Stevenson will be idle for 14 days before making its home debut
on Saturday, December 19 in a CAC contest versus Hood. Game time is
at 5:00 p.m.
