STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball
junior guard Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech)
scored a career-high 24 points, including 15 in the second half, to
go along with a game-high nine rebounds, but Catholic scored 56
second half points en route to a 91-70 non-conference victory
Wednesday night at Student Union Gymnasium.
The win was the fifth in the last six for the Cardinals (6-3)
after they started the season 1-2. They shot 53.4 percent from the
floor and were 10-of-20 from three-point range. Catholic also
received 51 points from its bench.
The visitors jumped out to an eight point lead in the game's
first 10 minutes before Stevenson (1-9) used a 14-6 run to tie the
game at 25-25 with 5:37 left in the first half.
However, the Cardinals answered with an 8-0 run to to push the
lead back to eight which they held into halftime, 35-27. Catholic's
bench contributed 26 of its 35 points, led by 10 from Matt Fazzini
who finished with a team-high 22.
The Mustangs cut the lead to four at 37-33 with 18:03 remaining
in the second half, but an 8-2 run pushed the Cardinal lead to
double digits for the first time and they would not let it slip
below seven the rest of the way.
Fazzini was one of four Cardinals in double figures as he was
10-of-13 fom the floor while leading scorer Jason Banzhaf added 18,
two above his season average. Banzhaf also had a team-high eight
rebounds. Shawn Holmes had 13 along with eight assists and R.J.
Dixon finished with 12.
It was the second 20-point game of the season for Collins and
the third of his career. His previous career-high was 22 points
which he set versus Washington (Md.) on November 24.
Junior guard Broderick Hill (Bowie/Bishop
McNamara) added 14 points, two shy of his career-high set
at Hood on Feb. 18, 2009. He was 4-of-9 from three-point range.
Junior guard Andy Shelly (York, Pa./West York) was
also in double figures, totaling a career-high 10 points. The duo
combined for 24 of Stevenson's 30 points off the bench.
Sophomore Keith Holtman (Baltimore/Eastern)
added four more blocks Wednesday night and now has 25 through 10
games to lead all players in the CAC. He also had four rebounds and
three assists.
The Mustangs look to snap a five-game losing streak at home on
Saturday when they host No. 11-ranked Amherst at 3:00 p.m. The 2007
national champions are currently 6-1 this season.
