WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stevenson men's basketball
freshman forward Danny Murphy (Severn/Glen Burnie)
scored a career-high 19 points, the last two of which came from the
free throw line with 26 seconds left to seal the first win of the
season for the Mustangs, 64-62 over Gallaudet in their CAC opener
Wednesday night.
The win snapped a 10-game losing streak for Stevenson (1-6, 1-0
CAC) and a nine-game road skid since the team beat Gallaudet 65-62
last season on Jan. 10, 2009.
Murphy finished with 19 points and nine rebounds while junior
forward Patrick Lewis (Timonium/Dulaney) totaled
his first career double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Murphy, Lewis, sophomore center Keith Holtman
(Baltimore/Eastern) and junior guard Greg Collins
(Baltimore/Western Tech) combined for 38 of the team's 53
rebounds as they held a plus-10 advantage, 25 of which came on the
offensive end.
The game featured four ties and five lead changes, including one
tie and two lead changes in the final 41 seconds.
After a fastbreak layup by Brandon McMillan gave the Bison (3-3,
0-2 CAC) a 62-61 lead, Murphy was fouled by Joshua Sisco
sending him to the free throw line. In front of a racous crowd of
nearly 600 fans, the freshman calmy hit both free throws to give
Stevenson a one-point lead with 26 seconds remaining.
Tony Tatum missed a jumper to give Gallaudet the lead before
Holtman grabbed the rebound and hit the second of two free throws
to increase the Mustangs' advantage to two with six seconds left
before Tatum's three-point heave in the final second was off,
giving Stevenson its first win.
Murphy scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half while
Holtman totaled all eight of his points and nine rebounds. Freshman
guard Zach Cooke (Morgantown, W. Va./Cushing
Academy) went 4-of-4 from the free throw line and is now
12-of-12 this season.
The Mustangs scored 19 second chance points, but its 22
turnovers led to 28 points for the Bison.
McMillan led Gallaudet with a game-high 33 points, 24 of which
came in the second half. He also added nine rebounds and three
steals. Tatum finished with nine points, six assists and four
rebounds.
Stevenson continues its three-game road trip on Saturday when it
heads to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 4:00 p.m., tip-off with the
12th-ranked Seahawks.
