TOWSON, Md. - Shane Yambor scored a game-high
20 points and Joel Smith added seven points and 11 rebounds to snap
a 10-game losing streak for Goucher in the Pride of Maryland
Championship presented by M&T Bank as the Gophers handed
Stevenson a 68-57 loss Sunday at Decker Sports and Recreation
Center.
The win was also the first for Goucher (1-2) in four tournament
meetings against the Mustangs and its first overall since a 77-72
victory over Frostburg State in the first round on Nov. 21, 2006.
The Gophers are now 2-13 in five years of the annual Division III
state championship.
For Stevenson (0-4), it was the first time in its five
appearances that it went 0-3. Since winning the inaugural
championship in 2005, the team has gone 3-9 in the Pride of
Maryland tournament.
Junior guard Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western
Tech) led the Mustangs with 17 points and a game-high 12
rebounds, marking his second career double double and first since
he had 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in last year's four
overtime victory at York (Pa.) on Dec. 6, 2008.
For his efforts, Collins was named to the Pride of Maryland
Championship all-tournament team.
Freshman Danny Murphy (Severn/Glen Burnie)
added a career-high 11 rebounds and has totaled a team-high 31 in
four games this season, an average of 7.8 per game.
Stevenson trailed by as many as 17 in the first half after
shooting 29.0 percent from the floor and turning it over nine
times. However, an 8-2 run in the final 2:29 cut the team's deficit
to 11 at the half, 36-25.
Collins scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and
grabbed five rebounds as the Mustangs cut the lead to nine, but
they couldn't get any closer as they dropped their eighth-straight
overall and ninth consecutive on the road.
The team's leading scorer, sophomore Jason Scroggins
(Baltimore/Boys' Latin), finished with 10 points, eight of
which came in the first half.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Washington
(Md.) for the second time in four days at Student Union Gymnasium
in its home opener at 8:00 p.m. The Shoremen handed the Mustangs an
82-63 loss in Saturday's Pride of Maryland consolation bracket.
