BALTIMORE, Md. - Andrew Farber-Miller and Pat
O'Connell each posted double doubles to lead Johns Hopkins to a
75-53 victory over the Stevenson men's basketball team Friday night
at Goldfarb Gymnasium in the first round of the Pride of Maryland
Championship presented by M&T Bank.
Farber-Miller totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds, both
game-highs, while O'Connell added 10 points and 10 rebounds as the
Blue Jays (1-0) won their season opener and advanced to the
tournament semifinals where they will play the winner between
Washington (Md.) and Hood Saturday at 6:00 p.m., at Goucher's
Sports and Recreation Center.
Meanwhile, the loss was the sixth-straight for the Mustangs
(0-2) dating back to last season and their eighth consecutive on
the road. The team will play the loser between Washington and Hood
on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., at Goucher.
After Stevenson rallied from a 10-point deficit to tie the game
at 16-16 with 5:11 remaining in the first half, Johns Hopkins
scored 43 of the game's next 55 points to take its largest lead of
the game at 31, 59-28 with 9:24 left.
During the decisive run, the Mustangs went 3-for-20 from the
floor while committing nine turnovers.
Stevenson responded with a 16-2 run behind eight points from
junior guard Broderick Hill (Bowie/Bishop
McNamara) and five from freshman forward Danny
Murphy (Severn/Glen Burnie), but the Blue Jays ran their
lead back up to 25 en route to their third victory in the last
three meetings against the Mustangs.
Murphy finished with nine points and eight rebounds, both
team-highs, while sophomore center Keith Holtman
(Baltimore/Eastern) also added eight rebounds to go along
with four blocks.
Stevenson made just 14-of-51 field goal attempts for 27.5
percent, but did manage to hit 23-of-28 attempts from the free
throw line for 82.1 percent. The team was also outrebounded 55-32.
