OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Breanne Russell scored what
proved to be the game-winning goal just four minutes into the game
as Frostburg State snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-0
victory over Stevenson in non-conference field hockey action
Saturday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex.
The Mustangs (4-10) dominated the game statistically, but could
not avoid the shutout despite holding a 22-10 advantage in shots
and an 11-6 margin in penalty corners.
Russell scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season on the
game's first shot which held until the final 18 seconds when Brooke
Tapman, who ranks second on the team in scoring behind Russell,
netted her fifth of the year.
The loss was the seventh in nine home games this season for
Stevenson. It was also the team's fourth by shutout.
Maggie Edwards had 10 saves for Frostburg State (7-7) while
Mustang junior Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) recorded four. She now needs just
five to break the school's career record.
