BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Brooklyn rallied from a
16-point second half deficit, capped off by a 19-2 run over
the final 5:39 en route to a 78-77 victory over the
Stevenson University men's basketball team Monday night at
Roosevelt Gymnasium in a non-conference contest.
With just under six minutes remaining, the Mustangs (2-9) held a
75-59 lead after rallying from a 14-point first half deficit and
tying the game at 52-52.
A foul shot by Jean-Baptiste gave the Bridges (8-3) a brief
one-point lead before Stevenson embarked scored 22 of the game's
next 27 points, capped by a three-pointer from junior guard
Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint Joseph) to take
its largest lead of the game.
However, a layup by freshman center Keith Holtman
(Baltimore/Eastern) with less than 1:30 left in the
game would be the only points Stevenson would muster over the final
5:39.
Holtman's layup gave the Mustangs a 77-76 lead with 30 seconds
remaining, ending a stretch of 17 consecutive points by Brooklyn.
On the ensuing possession for the Bridges, Richard Jean-Baptise
was fouled by Holtman on a drive along the baseline, sending the
junior forward to the free throw line where he made both attempts
to put Brooklyn back in front by one.
Needing a basket or a foul in the act of shooting to have a
chance at a game-winner with 18 seconds left, Stevenson was unable
to get a shot off before the buzzer, giving the Mustangs their
third-straight loss and fourth out of the last five by nine points
or less.
Jean-Baptiste led all scorers with 31 points to go along with
five points and two steals. Ahmad Hemingway added 14 points,
eight rebounds and four assists for the
Bridges while Nisbett chipped in with 12 points.
Woody led Stevenson with 24 points, but had 12 turnovers. As a
team, Stevenson committed 25 turnovers which led to 30 Brooklyn
points.
Senior center Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford) had
his fourth double double of the season, all in the last eight
games, with 17 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
Senior forward Ely Richardson (Hartford, Conn./Suffield
Academy) added 13 points, all of which came over a seven
minute stretch in the first half to help Stevenson cut the Bridges
lead to eight at halftime.
The Mustangs return home to face Wesley in a CAC contest on
Thursday at 8:00 p.m., following the women's game with the
Wolverines.
