STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson University
men's basketball senior guard Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount
Saint Joseph) posted his eighth 20-point performance of
the season with a game-high 23 points as the Mustangs swept the
season series with York (Pa.) with a 72-67 victory Saturday evening
at the Carolyn Manuszek Student Union Gymnasium.
After winning a four overtime thriller at York (Pa.) on
December 6, Stevenson (5-14, 4-6 CAC) made 7-of-8 free throw
attempts in the final 46 seconds to hold off a late Spartan rally.
Woody and senior guard Chaise Lancaster
(Bowie/Northwestern) combined to go 15-of-18 from the free
throw line in the second half where the team was 19-of-24.
The Mustangs also did a much better job
against the Spartans (6-14, 4-7 CAC) on the glass,
holding a 40-35 edge in rebounds. York (Pa.) entered the game
ranked third in the conference in rebound margin (+3.0) while
Stevenson was next to last (-5.0).
In the first meeting between the two teams, the Spartans held a
convincing 75-57 edge in rebounds which led to a 28-17 advantage in
second chance points. On Saturday, York (Pa.) managed just 13
second chance points.
After a layup by Nick Brady cut the Stevenson lead to one, 57-56
with 3:57 remaining, the Mustangs went on an 8-1 run to match
its largest lead of the game at eight with 1:02 left.
Stevenson scored six of their eight points during the run
at the free throw line and 17 of their final 24 from the charity
stripe.
Lancaster and senior center Kerry Dugan
(Sparks/Hereford) each had nine points in the victory
while Dugan added a team-high seven rebounds.
Nick Brady, the CAC's fifth-leading scorer behind Woody and Mary
Washington's Matt Hale, finished with 21 points to lead the
Spartans while Pat Kelley had 17 and Jeremy Keefer added 10.
Keefer also had a game-high eight rebounds.
Stevenson has just one day to prepare for a Monday road trip to
Wesley where the team will take on the Wolverines at 8:00 p.m.
Wesley edged out a 92-88 victory over the Mustangs at Student Union
Gymnasium on January 8.
Game Notes: The coaching staffs for both
team wore sneakers with their suits in support of the National
Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and American Cancer
Society. The NABC invited coaches to participate in the 2009
Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend January 30
through February 1 by wearing sneakers with their suits
at games held that weekend to show support for the Coaches vs.
Cancer program. Suits and Sneakers will unite coaches from across
the country in the common effort to raise cancer awareness in their
communities.
