STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson University men's
volleyball senior J.R. Jackson (Havre de Grace/Havre de
Grace) and junior David Lloyd (Germantown/Seneca
Valley) totaled 22 kills each as the Mustangs opened the
2009 season with consecutive 3-0 victories against Lancaster Bible
and the City College of New York Friday at Student Union Gymnasium.
Stevenson (2-0, 1-0 NECVA) defeated Lancaster Bible 30-17,
30-17, 30-28 before dispatching CCNY 30-16, 30-22, 30-21.
Jackson totaled 22 kills on 33 attempts while committing
just two errors for a .606 hitting percentage while Lloyd hit .390,
totaling six errors on 41 swings.
Sophomore Jason Matkowski (Warminster, Pa./William
Tennent) totaled 18 kills in his first two career matches
while adding nine digs and two total blocks. Senior
Steve Grossnickle (Perry Hall/Calvert Hall) added
16 kills and 11 digs.
Lloyd totaled a match-high 12 digs and hit .476 in the opener
against Lancaster Bible (1-2, 0-1 NECVA) while Jackson had 11
and a .500 hitting percentage. The two combined for 23 of the
team's 45 kills. Grossnickle added nine kills and a team-best four
digs.
Senior Anthony Cammarata (Fallston/Calvert
Hall) had 26 assists in just two games against the
Chargers and freshman Dean Massimini (Washington Township,
N.J./Washington Township) added 10.
Against CCNY (0-2), Jackson added 11 more kills, totaling nine
in the first game alone, and hit a blistering .733. Lloyd
added 10 while Matkowski led the Mustangs with a match-high
12.
Defensively, junior Ben Leatherman (Glen arm/Calvert
Hall) totaled a match-high 13 digs.
Cammarata and Massimini both matched their first match totals
with 26 and 10 assists, respectively, with Cammarata adding six
digs.
The Mustangs will play their third match of the first six at
home next Friday, hosting Baruch beginning at 7:00 p.m.
