Arlington, VA - In an away match against tough Capital Athletic
Conference challenger, the Marymount University Saints (12-10,
6-7), the men of Villa Julie basketball reigned supreme, slipping
past the Saints with a 73-69 victory. This game marks the second
win against the Saints this season and improves the Mustangs'
record to 6-16 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
The Saints made their way onto the scoreboard first with a
3-pointer, but two free throws from Jeremy Bernard
(Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech.) in the opening minutes put
the visitors on the board nearly one minute after the first
Marymount points. Three points from Greg Collins
(Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech) at 15:18 put the Mustangs up
by four at 9-5.The men gripped the lead for the majority of the
period, but with 4:39 left in on the clock, the Saints tied Villa
Julie at 20-20.
With a series of free throws, the Saints then went on a 4-0 run,
and led the Mustangs by four as the game neared its midpoint. The
teams battled for the lead, and with a lay-up from
Bernard at 1:53, Villa Julie was back on top at
26-25. The Mustangs' defense held Marymount to 26, and the team
went on to close the half with a five-point advantage with 31 on
the scoreboard.
The teams returned from halftime, and Marymount was first to
score with a quick layup less than 15 seconds into the period. But
the Mustangs maintained their composure, holding on to their lead.
A lay-up by Collins, assisted by Vincent
Johnson (Baltimore, MD/ Southern), brought the score to
33-29.
The Saints managed to catch up with the Mustangs at 38-38 and
gained a brief two-point lead at 14:47. But a jump shot from
Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern) tied
the game again at 40-40, as Villa Julie attempted to go on
dominating the scoreboard. The two teams continued to compete
aggressively, and with 4:25 left to play, the game was bound by a
57-57 tie. A 3-pointer from Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/ Mt.
St. Joseph) helped the team fight for the win as the clock
wound down. Marymount didn't give up, but the Mustangs managed to
hold on to a marginal lead, edging the Saints by four to end the
contest.
Woody led the team in scoring with 28 points.
Collins also tallied double-digit points, with 15,
and Bernard led the team with 10 points and 11
rebounds, giving him the team-high in rebounding and a
double-double for the night.
The Mustangs travel to contest conference rivals, the Salisbury
University Seahawks, on Sat. Feb 16 at 4 p.m.
