YORK, Pa. - Stevenson senior guard
Chaise Lancaster (Bowie/Northwestern) scored a
career-high 24 points, five of which came in a decisive fourth
overtime, as the Mustangs overcame a 20-point deficit en route to a
104-92 victory over York (Pa.) in four overtimes Sunday night in
front of 1,545 fans at the Grumbacher Center.
The win came in the longest game in school history for the
Mustangs (2-6, 1-1 CAC) and snapped a six-game road losing streak.
It also marked the first time since Feb. 18, 2006 in a 113-68
victory over Purchase, a span of 67 games, that Stevenson totaled
100 points.
Senior guard Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint
Joseph) led all scorers with 30 points, the second time
this season and fifth in his career that he has scored reached the
30-point plateau. The Mustangs are now 1-4 when Woody scores
at least 30.
Trailing 78-75 late in the first overtime, Woody hit a
three-pointer to force the second overtime.
All four overtimes were full of excitement that kept fans,
players and coaches on edge. Following Woody's three-pointer in the
first overtime, neither team was able to gain control in the second
as the two combined for just four points with both of Stevenson's
coming on free throws and the Spartans' on a layup by Dylan Hoffman
just four seconds in.
In the third overtime, the Mustangs seemed to have
won 89-87 when Lancaster scored on layup with 0.6 seconds
remaining. After the layup, the Mustangs stormed the court and were
assessed a technical foul leading to two free throws by the
Spartans' Nick Brady to tie the game for the 14th time and send the
game to a fourth overtime.
The events only seemed to ignite the Mustangs who proceeded to
outscore the Spartans 15-3 in the final period. Stevenson held York
to just 1-of-10 shooting from the floor while hitting 8-of-13 from
the free throw line.
The Mustangs set the stage for their heroics thanks to a 38-18
run from the 4:39 mark of the first half to the 5:34 mark of the
second half when Stevenson erased a 20-point deficit to tie the
game at 59-59.
There would be four more ties and four lead changes over
the final five-plus minutes with York (3-5, 1-1 CAC) getting a
layup and two big blocks from Hoffman in the last minute to send
the game into overtime.
Sophomore Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech)
finished with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Stevenson,
marking his first career double double. Collins and Lancaster each
played 57 of the game's 60 minutes while Woody played in 56.
Junior guard Irvin Jones (Landover/Riverdale
Baptist) had a season-high 10 points.
The Spartans had three players register double doubles led by
Brady's 27 points and 13 rebounds. Jeremy Keefer totaled 13 points
and 12 rebounds while Matt Moley had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Stevenson will now have a two-week layoff before returning to
action at Austin on Saturday, December 20.
