STEVENSON, Md. - Allie Scott totaled 12 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, as St. Mary's (Md.) took advantage of turnovers and free throws to hand Stevenson a 56-45 defeat in a sloppy CAC opener for both teams Wednesday night at Student Union Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (1-4, 0-1 CAC), who entered the game ranked next to last in the conference in turnovers, committed 28, 19 of which came in the first half as they dropped their ninth game in the last 10, including fifth-straight at home.

Freshman guard Qiana Coleman (Ellicott City/Mount Hebron) led Stevenson with eight points and two steals while sophomore Denita Brown (Laurel/Montrose Christian) had three points, six rebounds and five blocks.

The Seahawks (2-5, 1-0 CAC) led by as many as five in the first half which equalled their halftime lead at 26-21. Neither team was able to gain control of the game as the two teams combined for 33 turnovers and a just 34.0 percent shooting from the floor.

St. Mary's scored the first five points in a span of 1:39 to start the second half to push it's leasd to 10 before the Mustangs rallied with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 37-36 with 8:24 left.

However, a 12-2 run by the Seahawks over the next 5:36 gave them their largest lead of the game at 11 which proved to be the final margin of victory.

Stevenson did a much better job with its ball control in the second half, but the Mustangs free throw shooting evaded them as they hit only 6-of-13 attempts and just 9-of-21 for the game.

Meanwhile, St. Mary's, who entered the game ranked last in the CAC in free throw shooting, one spot behind Stevenson, made 17-of-24.

Megan Seeman added 13 points for the Seahawks while Tiara Hurte had nine points and eight rebounds.

Freshman forward Joy Bettis (Laurel/Montrose Christian) finished with six points and five rebounds for Stevenson and freshman guard Breonna Brewer (Baltimore/Polytechnic) had seven points and four rebounds.

The Mustangs travel to York (Pa.) on Saturday. Game time is at 5:00 p.m.
