STEVENSON, Md. - Allie Scott totaled 12 points
and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, as St. Mary's (Md.) took
advantage of turnovers and free throws to hand Stevenson a 56-45
defeat in a sloppy CAC opener for both teams Wednesday night at
Student Union Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (1-4, 0-1 CAC), who entered the game ranked next to
last in the conference in turnovers, committed 28, 19 of which came
in the first half as they dropped their ninth game in the last 10,
including fifth-straight at home.
Freshman guard Qiana Coleman (Ellicott City/Mount
Hebron) led Stevenson with eight points and two steals
while sophomore Denita Brown (Laurel/Montrose
Christian) had three points, six rebounds and five blocks.
The Seahawks (2-5, 1-0 CAC) led by as many as five in the first
half which equalled their halftime lead at 26-21. Neither team was
able to gain control of the game as the two teams combined for 33
turnovers and a just 34.0 percent shooting from the floor.
St. Mary's scored the first five points in a span of 1:39 to
start the second half to push it's leasd to 10 before the
Mustangs rallied with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 37-36
with 8:24 left.
However, a 12-2 run by the Seahawks over the next 5:36 gave them
their largest lead of the game at 11 which proved to be the final
margin of victory.
Stevenson did a much better job with its ball control in the
second half, but the Mustangs free throw shooting evaded them as
they hit only 6-of-13 attempts and just 9-of-21 for the game.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's, who entered the game ranked last in the
CAC in free throw shooting, one spot behind Stevenson, made
17-of-24.
Megan Seeman added 13 points for the Seahawks while Tiara Hurte
had nine points and eight rebounds.
Freshman forward Joy Bettis (Laurel/Montrose
Christian) finished with six points and five rebounds for
Stevenson and freshman guard Breonna Brewer
(Baltimore/Polytechnic) had seven points and four
rebounds.
The Mustangs travel to York (Pa.) on Saturday. Game time is at
5:00 p.m.
