SHERMAN, Tex. - Austin had 13 players
score at least two points and the Kangaroos got 40 points
from their bench as they handed the Stevenson men's basketball team
a 78-58 loss Saturday afternoon at the Hughey Center.
The win was the fourth in the last six games for Austin (4-4),
all four of which have come at home.
Taylor Beatty led the Kangaroos with eight points and a
game-high 12 rebounds while Spencer Burke added seven points, 11
rebounds and three blocks in just 19 minutes. Kola Alade had a
team-high nine points.
Senior center Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford) led
the Mustangs (2-7) with his third double double of the season,
totaling 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Austin outrebounded Stevenson 50-40 which led to a 15-7 edge in
second chance points. The Kangaroos also held a 13-5 edge in points
in turnovers.
The biggest difference in the game came in the second half
where Austin held the Mustangs to 10-of-32 shooting from the
floor, including 2-of-11 from three-point range, outscoring them by
15.
After falling behind 5-0, Stevenson answered with an 11-2 run to
take its largest lead of the game at four points, 11-7 with 14:07
left in the first half.
However, the Kangaroos responded with a 10-1 run over the next
2:38 to go back in front by five and they would never trail again.
The Mustangs trailed by five at halftime and were down by
three with 10:51 remaining in the second half before a 12-2
run by Austin increased its lead to 13 en route to a
20-point victory.
The Kangaroos scored 29 of their 46 second half points off the
bench. Arron Mewbourn had eight points as a reserve followed by
seven points and six rebounds from Josh Saunders.
Junior Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint
Joseph) scored a game-high 17 points for Stevenson while
senior guard Chaise Lancaster (Bowie/Northwestern)
finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Mustangs face Dallas on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
