WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stevenson junior
Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint Joseph) tied his
career-high with 35 points, which included a career-best six
three-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Catholic jumped out to a
24-point halftime lead en route to an 82-62 victory over the
Mustangs Saturday night at the DuFour Center.
The Cardinals (4-0) remained unbeaten with the win after
shooting 55.3 percent from the floor, including 63 percent in the
first half. They also received 40 points from their bench,
highlighted by a team-high 21 points from Matt Fazzini.
Fazzini was one of two Cardinals in double figures as Jason
Banzhaf totaled 20. Combined, the two were 14-of-19 from the floor,
4-of-5 from three-point range and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
They also totaled 13 rebounds.
Woody scored 22 of the Mustangs' 42 points in the
second half as they outscored Catholic by four. He also had 35
points in a 91-78 loss at Mary Washington on Jan. 23, 2008.
However, the loss marked the first time that Stevenson
(0-3) has lost three-straight games to open a season in five
years.
The Cardinals never trailed in the game after outscoring
Stevenson 21-8 over the first 7:48 en route to a 26-point advantage
at 44-18 with 1:17 left in the first half. Fazzini and
Banzhaf combined for 24 of Catholic's 44 first half points.
Led by 13 points from Woody, the Mustangs opened the second half
on a 19-6 run over the first six minutes to cut their deficit to
12, but that would be as close as they would get as the Cardinals
answered with an 11-4 spurt to push the lead back to 19.
Sophomore Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech)
had nine points for Stevenson while senior Chaise Lancaster
(Bowie/Northwestern) totaled six points, four assists and
two rebounds. Senior Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford)
had a team-high seven rebounds in 25 minutes before fouling out.
The Mustangs begin play in the 2008 Provident Pride Tournament
on Tuesday when they travel to Washington (Md.) for a first round
contest. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
