York, PA- Seeking to gain ground on the road to becoming Capital
Athletic Conference champions, the Mustangs took to their rival
conference opponent York College (13-6, 8-2) for the second time
this season.
Ely Richardson (Hartford, CT/ Suffield Academy)
got the game started, putting two Mustang points on the board in
the first minute. Both teams fought to maintain control of the
score, and at 13:43, a pair of free-throws from Greg Woody
(Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph) gave the Mustangs a
one-point lead at 13-12. York returned the two points to re-gain
the lead and followed up with an 11-0 run, giving them the top
position at 22-13 with 10:19 left on the clock. Later in the half,
the Mustangs continued their attempts to emerge as game leaders,
but as Matt Leddy (Great Mills, MD/ Great
Mills) sank a three-pointer three minutes before halftime,
the team still fell 12 points behind at 34-22. York went on to end
the period 37-25.
Early in the second half, the Mustangs picked up single points
from free-throw shooters Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/
Northwestern), who went 4-4 for the night, and
Richardson, who went 3-4. A three-point play from
Woody nearly two minutes later further aided the
men, bringing the score to 43-31. At 7:56, another three points
from Woody from behind the arch brought the team
nine points away from tying with their rival at 59-50. Villa Julie
never lost hope for a come-from-behind success, and battled to gain
a handle on the game, outscoring the Spartans in the second half
49-47. But York's early lead prevented the Mustangs from taking
home the win, giving the Spartans an 84-74 victory.
With another high-scoring game added to Villa Julie's records,
Woody managed 32 points against the Spartans to
lead the team. Richardson added 11 points and
seven rebounds, while Lancaster added 10 to the
visitors' score. Jeremy Bernard (Baltimore, MD/ Western
Tech.) came second in rebounding for the night with a
total of six.
On Saturday, Feb. 2 at 4 p.m., the Mustangs will take on Wesley
College. In the teams' last encounter, Villa Julie defeated their
conference competitor by nine points.
