New Jersey City, NJ - The VJC Men's Volleyball team bounced back
from a tough start to the season by sweeping their tri-match at New
Jersey City University. The Mustangs were in convincing
form, shutting out Brooklyn College 3-0 and overcoming
New Jersey City University 3-2 in a five game thriller to
improve their record to 2-3.
A balanced attack helped the VJC men (2-3) defeat Brooklyn
College in the first match of the trimatch. Senior JR
Jackson (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) led the
attack with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .571. Senior
Alex Ness (Jarrettsville, MD/North
Harford) added 8 kills as the Mustangs controlled
the net. Vital contributions from freshman John Hall
(Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) who had 18 assists, and
sophmore transfer Dan Phillips (Street, MD/Harford
Tech) who added 7 kills were a vital part of the
Mustang's first college win. The Mustangs service game was also in
excellent shape, with sophomore David Lloyd
(Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley) serving 4
aces. The Mustangs won 3-0 with game scores of 30-17, 30-21 and
30-19.
In the second match against a quick, tenacious New Jersey
City University, hustle and defense paved the way to the second win
of the day for the Mustangs in a five game thriller. The
Mustangs tallied 60 digs with Steve Grossnickle (Perry
Hall, MD/Calvert Hall) and Alex Ness
leading the way with 11 and 15 respectively. Setter
John Hall had 45 assists. JR
Jackson was on fire again with 25 kills which
was enabled by the excellent passing of Anthony Cammarata
(Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) and Ben
Leatherman (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert Hall) as well as
Ness, Jackson,
Phillips and Grossnickle. It was
a thoroughly convincing team effort.
The Mustangs are home against Lancastar Bible College on
Wednesday 30th January at the Stevenson Gym for one of their
few home matches.
