Stevenson, MD-As they took on another tough Capital Athletic
Conference opponent, the Mustangs nearly overcame the St. Mary's
College Seahawks, remaining in contention with the Hawks until the
final seconds of the game.
Starting guard for the Mustangs Greg Woody (Baltimore,
MD/ Mt. St. Joseph) put the first points on the scoreboard
with a lay-up. From there, the teams were in constant competition,
with the score remaining tied at almost every point. At 10:45, a
free-throw from Ely Richardson (Hartford, CT/ Suffield
Academy) brought the score to 16-14 with the Mustangs
trailing by two. The teams' scores remained within a few points of
each other until the end of the period, and St. Mary's ended the
half with a three-point lead at 31-28.
The determined Mustangs re-entered the gym looking to steal the
Seahawks lead, but the Seahawks managed an 11-0 run in the early
minutes of the half, leaving the Mustangs 12 points behind. The
Mustangs quickly lessened the gap with nine uninterrupted points of
their own, bringing the score to 44-41 with a jumper from guard
Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern) at
13:07. Both teams attempted to stop the other's momentum, but the
Seahawks began pulling away as the game clock wound down. Coming
within two points of tying the game, the Mustangs surrendered in
the end, and the Seahawks sealed the 70-65 victory.
Leading the Mustangs' scoring efforts with 31 points was
Woody, followed by Richardson,
who put up eight points for the team. Jeremy Bernard
(Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech.) led Villa Julie's men in
rebounding with a total of twelve.
The team will hit the road on Wednesday, Jan. 30 to face York
College at 8 p.m.
