Fredericksburg, Va.- Pushed by the tenacity of starting point
guard Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph),
who scored a season-high of 35 points, the Mustangs contested the
number two Capital Athletic Conference team as they traveled to the
University of Mary Washington in Virginia (10-5, 6-2). The
Mustangs battled hard but were defeated 91-78 by the
conference's second place team.
The Mustangs were second to put points on the scoreboard, but
their pressure on defense landed them three back-to-back steals and
six fast-break points in the opening three minutes of the game.
After Woody sank his first three-pointer of the
night, the visitors gained a six point lead over the Eagles. UMW
competed to again secure the leading score, but another long shot
from Woody, assisted by Broderick
Hill (Largo, MD/
Bishop McNamara), tied the game at 23-23 at 8:31. The
Eagles began to pull away, but not by much. A three-point basket
from Woody at the buzzer ended the half 46-40 with
UMW ahead by only six points.
Going into the second period, the Mustangs looked to advance
past the Eagles, but the men of UMW were able to hold on to their
lead for the duration of the game. At 12:28, a lay-up from
Greg Collins
(Baltimore,
MD/ Western Tech.) brought the
score to 62-51, as the team hoped to turn the game around. And with
3:48 on the clock, Collins put in two points for
the Mustangs with a dunk. However, the team's attempts to come back
for the win ended with them falling to their opponents and bringing
Villa Julie's overall record to 5-12 and CAC record to 3-5.
In addition to Woody, who shot 11-18 from the
field and 10-14 from the three-point range,
Collins and Ely Richardson
(Hartford,
CT/ Suffield
Academy) also managed to score in
the double digits, Collins with 13 and
Richardson with 10. Totaling six for the night,
Jeremy Bernard
(Baltimore,
MD/ Western Tech.) led the squad
in rebounds.
The Mustangs' next game will be against St. Mary's College at
home on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m.
