Frederick, Md. - Proving their competitiveness and athleticism
as newcomers to the Capital Athletic Conference, Villa Julie's men
took on the Hood College Blazers (11-4, 5-1), who stand at number
one in the conference.
The Blazers were first to score and gained an early lead with
the Mustangs close behind. At 7:36, two points from Mike
Turner (Baltimore,
MD/ Polytechnic) knocked Hood's
lead down to one point and brought the score to 10-9. After a short
scoring run by the Blazers increased the team's lead to eight
points, the Mustangs pulled together to close the gap. A final
jumper by Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/
Northwestern) added two points to the Mustangs' score with
just over a minute before halftime, and the team finished the
period 17-21.
With only a four-point deficit blocking the Mustangs from tying
and going on to take the lead, the team was determined not to be
defeated. The men fell twelve points behind the Blazers after
nearly six minutes of play, but the Mustangs continued to battle
their opponents with ambition. With a series of three-pointers from
Greg Woody
(Baltimore,
MD/ Mt.
St. Joseph), Hood's lead was cut
to two points as the scoreboard displayed 35-33.
Midway through the half, the Mustangs were down by just one
thanks to a lay-up from guard Broderick Hill (Largo, MD/
Bishop McNamara), and with four minutes on the clock,
Justin Miles (Baltimore, MD/ Douglas) put in two
points to bring the Mustangs within five points of the Blazers
at 50-45. Villa Julie hovered on taking over the game for most of
the half, but Hood pulled away in the final minutes, claiming
the 69-56 win.
Woody, who went 9-10 from the free-throw line,
was instrumental to the Mustangs' attempt at victory with a total
of 25 points. Miles led the team in rebounds with
seven and was second in scoring with eight points, while
Hill, Ely
Richardson
(Hartford,
CT/ Suffield
Academy) and Greg Collins
(Baltimore,
MD/ Western Tech) grabbed six
boards each.
The Mustangs will travel to contest the University of Mary
Washington on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m.
