Baltimore, MD.- The Mustangs traveled to
Johns Hopkins University for the first round of the Division III
NCAA Tournament.
Villa Julie began strongly, appearing on the scoreboard first
with an immediate three-pointer by Kerry Dugan
(Sparks, MD / Hereford). Within the first five minutes of
play, the Mustangs had extended their lead to 12-2 after a jumper
by Phil Williams (District Heights, MD / Bishop
McNamara). They continued to maintain the lead to the end of
the half, 42-35.
Johns Hopkins slowly wore away at the gap until the score
finally came to a tie at 8:31, 63-63. The Blue Jays then took
the lead for the first time with a three-point shot by Doug
Polster. At 4:04, Steven Segears (Lanham, MD
/ St. Johns College HS) completed a lay-up assisted by
Jason Lambert (Bloomfield, CT / Kingswood Oxford)
to make the score 70-68, Mustangs. However, the Blue Jays
returned to take the lead and the eventual win, 84-72.
The Mustangs finish their season 20-8 while Johns Hopkins
advances to the next round of the tournament with a record of 24-4.
Senior captain Steven Segears led the Mustangs with 19 points,
eight rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Senior
Phil Williams added 15 points,
while Jason Lambert also added 15 points with
three assists. In addition, Cilk McSweeney
(Ft. Lauderdale, FL / Dillard) and Kerry Dugan
contributed 10 points each.
