Baltimore, MD- The Mustangs fought down to the
final seconds against the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in the final
round of the Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament, but were
defeated 64-61 in overtime.
The Mustangs were led in the first half by Greg Woody
(Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph) with nine points and
sophomore forward Jeremy Bernard (Baltimore, MD/ Western
Tech) with six points. However, the Mustangs were
down two points by halftime, 35-33.
The Blue Jays came back on the court and increased their lead to
six points within the first five minutes of the second period; but
the Mustangs took a time out, got back into the game, and regained
their place on the scoreboard. With a jumper from guard
Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern ) at one
minute remaining, the Mustangs tied the score at 56, gaining an
extra five-minute period.
In overtime, the Blue Jays held on to their lead, although the
Mustangs trailed behind by three points with just seconds left on
the game clock. The Mustangs attempted to tie the game in the final
seconds, but the Blue Jays finished in the lead, giving Johns
Hopkins the fifth-place spot and Villa Julie the sixth in the
tournament.
Wood and Mike Turner (Baltimore,
MD/Polytechnic) ended the game with 12 points each, while
senior forward Justin Miles (Baltimore,
MD/ Frederick Douglas) scored seven points; and
Woody, Miles and forward
Anatoly Smolkin (Baltimore, MD/ Pikesville) were
top rebounders for the Mustangs with six total rebounds each.
Villa Julie will go up against St. Mary's on November 28,
traveling to their first Capital Athletic Conference game of the
season.
