Baltimore, Md.-The Mustangs snag their first win of the season
in the second round of the Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament,
defeating Goucher College 89-81 in overtime.
The Mustangs were scoreless in the first half until
Justin Miles
(Baltimore,
MD/Frederick Douglas) grabbed a
rebound and made the lay-up at 16:40 to make the score 2-9.
The Gophers went on a run to go up by as many as 7 over the
Mustangs until Chaise Lancaster (Bowie,
MD/Northwestern) hit the net with 7:00 left on the
clock. Greg Collins
(Baltimore,
MD/Western Tech) put the Mustangs
up by 5 hitting a three-pointer and a jump shot back-to-back.
Goucher tied it up with 41 seconds left on the clock and at
halftime the Mustangs had the lead 36-35.
Ely Richardson
(Hartford,
CT/Suffield
Academy) ran the court in the
second half, hitting the net three times in less than a
minute. The Gophers came back and tied the game,52-52, with
12:04 left on the clock off of a three-pointer by Mike
Schaerr. They then went on to take the lead 58-55 off
back-to-back three pointers. Broderick Hill
(Largo, MD/Bishop
MacNamara) made a key three-pointer to tie the Gophers
58-58. The lead was exchanged many times throughout the rest
of the game. After several turnovers by both teams regulation
time ran out with the score tied at 73-73.
In the 5 minute overtime, the Mustangs took over the hardwood,
keeping the Gophers from scoring less than 10 points. The
Mustangs scored first when Richardson stole the
ball from Marcus Cotton and handed it off to Greg Woody
(Baltimore,
MD/Mt. St.
Joe) who hit the net off of a fast
break. The Mustangs gained their biggest lead of the day,
85-76, off of a pair of free throws by
Lancaster. The Gophers came back and closed
the gap to 6 but that was the closest they would see to a win for
the day.
The Mustangs continued to dominate the court and went up by 10,
89-79, with only 10 seconds left. The Mustangs came out on
top and advance their record to 1-2 overall.
Richardson led the Mustangs with a double-double
of 12 boards and 10 points; Mike Turner (Baltimore,
MD/Polytechnic) had the most points for the game with 19;
Lancaster made 6 out of 6 free throws and 4 shots
from the court to total 14 points for the day;
Woody totaled 11 points on the day; and
Hill totaled 10 points hitting 4 out of 5 shots
from the floor and making 2 out of 2 three-pointers.
The Mustangs go on to play tomorrow at 2:00 against the winner of
the Hopkins/Washington (Md.) game at Johns Hopkins for their final
game in the 2007 Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament.
