Villa Julie took on Lebanon Valley in the first men's game of
the 9th Annual Legg Mason Winter Classic. It was a Cinderella
win for the Mustangs as Chris Warren (Largo, MD/
Bishop MacNamara) banked a three-point shot with 2.8 seconds left
in the game to give the Mustangs the win 63-62.
In the first half, Villa took a quick lead off two free throws by
Cilk McSweeney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/ Dillard)
within 20 seconds of the game. Both teams traded leads
throughout the first half. The Mustangs went up by as many as
six points from a lay-up by Steve Segears (Lanham,
MD/ St. Johns College HS) at 14:30. Villa saw their last lead
of the half at 4:51 when McSweeney hit a critical
lay-up to put the Mustangs ahead 21-20. Lebanon Valley's Kyle
Enoch hit a three-point shot and the Flying Dutchmen went into the
half ahead 33-24.
The second half began and Lebanon Valley came out strong.
They went up by as many as 12 points at 16:18 until the Mustangs
took charge of the game. At 10:38 Jason
Lambert (Bloomsfield, CT/ Suffield Academy) hit a
three-point shot, off of a pass by Warren, that
gave the Mustangs momentum and started a scoring run.
The Mustangs grabbed the lead, 56-54, at 3:15 when freshman
Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph's) sunk
a critical three-point shot with an assist by
Segears. A series of fouls and free
throws put the Mustangs down 62-60 with 17 seconds left in the
game. With less then five seconds left
Warren sunk the game winning three-point shot to
make the score 63-62.
This win ended a three game loosing streak and advanced their
record to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the NEAC. The Mustangs will
now play in the Championship game tomorrow at 6 pm facing either
Maryland Bible or SUNY- Old Westbury.
