Reading, PA.- The Mustangs travelled to NEAC
rival PSU-Berks this evening. The game began with many
lead exchanges in the first half, but ended with Villa on top
84-75.
Villa's Chris Warren (Largo, MD/ Bishop
MacNamara) opened the game with a three-point shot
at 18:02. The Mustangs held the Nittany Lions from
scoring until the 14 minute mark. At 10:00, PSU's Mark Fowler
hit a jumper to tie the game at 10-10. The lead was exchaged
multiple times througout the rest of the half.
With 57 seconds left on the clock, Greg Woody
(Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joe's) hit nothing but net on a
three-pointer to regain the lead at 31-28. Then,
Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern) stole
the ball from the Lions and hit a lay-up on a fast break to make
the score 33-28. Steve Segears
(Lanham, MD/ St. Johns College HS) made two free-throws to give the
Mustangs the lead at the half, 35-30.
The second half opened up with Cilk McSweeney
(Ft. Lauderdale, FL/ Dillard) hitting a jumper within 15 seconds of
the game. Villa Julie continued to maintain control of the
ball and went up by as many as 13 points off of a three-point shot
by Phil Williams (Bishop Heights, MD/ Bishop
MacNamara) to make the score, 57-44.
At 7:51 PSU hit a dunk and started to gain momentum. However
it wasn't enough to take control of the game. With under five
minutes on the clock, McSweeney shut down the
Lions' momentum by sinking two dunks. The second
dunk was assisted by Woody and
McSweeney also made the extra point to make
the score 78-69 with 2:00 left on the clock. The Mustangs
kept control of the glass and ended the game with a 84-75
win.
Top scorer of the game was PSU's Joe Askew with 41 points.
McSweeney was the top scorer for the Mustangs with
15 points, followed by Lancaster with 14 points
and Jason Lambert (Bloomfield, CT/
Kingswood-Oxford) with 13 points.
With the win, the Mustangs' record climbs to 7-7 overall and 4-2
in the NEAC. They hit the court again on Saturday, January
20, at 4:00 to play at SUNY-Purchase.
