The Mustangs hit the road to play against Chestnut Hill.
The Mustangs fought a hard battle against the number one team in
their division but the Griffins ended up on top 76-70.
In under two minutes of the game, Cilk
McSweeney (Ft. Lauderdale , FL / Dillard) hit a
lay-up and played outstanding defense to allow Steve
Segears (Lanham, MD/ St. Johns College HS) to steal the
ball from the Griffins and give Villa an early lead. At
15:52, Chris Warren (Largo , MD/ Bishop MacNamara)
heard nothing but net when he sunk a three-point shot.
Chestnut Hill began to control the court until 4:50 when
Jason Lambert (Bloomsfield , CT /
Kingswood-Oxford) hit a lay-up to leave the Mustangs trailing by
one, 30-29. With only three minutes left in the half,
McSweeney sunk two free-throws to regain the lead
for the Mustangs 33-32. In return, the Griffin 's Isaac Greer
made two lay-ups to give Chestnut Hill the lead at half
38-35.
In the second half, the Griffins maintained the lead.
The Mustangs were down by as much as nine points and came
back to within two points. At 7:09,
McSweeney stole the ball from Chestnut's Isaac
Greer and went onto sink a vital three-pointer to make the score
59-57. Chestnut answered strong and at 1:28, Griffin , David
Goode dunked the ball and the Griffins went on to win the game
76-70.
The top scorers for the Mustangs were Segears with
a double-double of 21 points and 14 boards;
McSweeney with 18 points and four assists, as well
as three blocks and two steals; and Lambert with
14 points. Overall, the Mustangs' record is 5-7 and 2-2 in
the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Next, the
Mustangs will take on Keystone in a conference battle on Saturday,
January 14, at 3 pm.
