OWINGS MILLS, MD - Lauren Wright (Millville, DE
/ Worcester Prep) posted 13 saves to shutout York College (1-1) 1-0
in the Championship game of the Fourth Annual Black-Eyed Susan
Field Hockey Tournament hosted by Villa Julie College. Her efforts
landed the Fairleigh Dickinson sophomore on the All Tournament
team, along with teammates Krystle Birmingham
(Pinehill , NJ / Overbrook) and Lindsey Specht
(Jackson , NJ / Jackson). Specht was named the tournament's Most
Valuable Player.
Debbie Hillman (Southampton , NJ / Lenape)
scored the game's only goal 22:43 into the contest to deliver FDU
the championship. Her goal was assisted by Brimingham.
York peppered Wright with 17 shots in the game, while FDU
put 11 shots on York 's Claire Rekitzke (Seaford ,
DE / Seaford ). Rekitzke turned away 10 shots in being saddled with
the loss.
Fairleigh Dickinson starts its season at 2-0 with the tournament
championship under its belt. York slips to 1-1.
GAME 3: Rowan University 4, Neuman College 0
OWINGS MILLS, Md- Rowan University (2-0) dominated
the match against Neumann College (1-1), not allowing any shots at
their defensive goal. Susan Massara (Hammonton,
NJ/Hammonton) scored one of her two goals of the game to put Rowan
University on the scoreboard first. Before the end of the half
Kimberly Brozosky (Richwood, NJ/Clearview Reg) to
put Rowan up by 2, with an assist from Danielle
Miranda (Flanders, NJ/ Mount Olive).
Neumann goalkeeper Chelsea Ward (Willingboro, NJ/
Rancocas Valley) stayed busy with an astounding 13 saves for
the match. Jennifer Lipnickey (Chester, NJ/ West
Morris-Mendham) and Susan Massara contributed a point apiece for
Rowan University to close out the contest.
Rowan University finished the Black Eyed Susan Tournament with an
impressive (2-0) and Neumann University begins their season (1-1).
GAME 2: Villa Julie 2, SUNY-Oswego 1
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Villa Julie Mustangs (1-1) hung on for a
2-1 victory in a tightly contested match against SUNY-Oswego (0-2)
on Sunday. The Mustangs' Kaitlin Brzozowski (Bel
Air, MD / Fallston) turned away six shots, including a pair in the
game's waning minutes, to pull out the season's first win.
Villa Julie jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal from
Kristina Leventis (Baltimore , MD / Baltimore
Lutheran) only five minutes into the match. The Mustangs never
looked back as senior Leigh Geary (Elkton MD /
Elkton) scored the game game-winning goal 13 minutes prior to the
half. Catherine Connelly (Fallston, MD / Fallston)
and Emily Pullarn (Perry Hall, MD /Perry Hall)
assisted Geary's Tally.
SUNY-Oswego cut the lead to 2-1 within the first two minutes of
the second half with Jenna Retzer (Lancaster, PA /
Lancaster) scoring the Lakers only goal. It was the only time
Oswego was able to solve Brzozowski, who has only seven calendar
days experience between the pipes.
SUNY-Oswego finishes the tournament 0-2 and Villa Julie evens
their record to 1-1. The Mustangs are back in action on Thursday,
September 7th against St. Mary's College at 4:30pm.
GAME 1: Wittenberg 1, College of Notre Dame 0
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Wittenberg University defeated
the College of Notre Dame by a score of 1-0 on Sunday. The game was
the first of four played at Villa Julie on Sunday, the second day
of the Fourth Annual Black-Eyed Susan Field Hockey Tournament.
Junior Caroline Mason (New Canaan , CT , New
Canaan ) tallied the game winning goal with 11:26 remaining in the
second half to capture the win.
Wittenberg dominated in the scoreless first half with 11
shots compared to the 2 shots taken by Notre Dame. Notre Dome's
goalkeeper, Amanda Arkwright (North Kingston , RI
/ North Kingston ), blocked 7 shots in the first half and 9 for the
entire game to keep the Gators within reach.
Wittenberg University finishes the tournament with a
record of 1-1 and the College of Notre Dame begins its season 0-2.
