Hartford, CT.- Villa Julie traveled to face the
Trinity College Bantams. The game opened up with back and
forth shooting by both teams. Trinity took the lead by seven
points at the 14 minute mark. Elysian
Richardson (Hartford , CT / Suffield Academy ) started a
scoring run, in his hometown, for the Mustangs with a lay-up
followed by a dunk and another lay-up at 8:20 to tie the game at
17-17.
With only 3:50 left in the half Trinity hit a lay-up to tie the
game at 22-22. Villa responded with foul shots by
Anatoly Smolkin (Pikesville , MD / Pikesville) and
a free throw by Chris Warren (Largo ,MD/ Bishop
McNamara). With 2:00 remaining Phillip
Williams (District Heights , MD / Bishop McNamara) hit two
three-pointers in a row. Trinity answered with a series of
free throws and lay-ups to gain the lead 33-30 with 45 seconds to
go.
Warren hit a crucial three-point shot with 25
seconds left in the half to tie the game 33-33. Trinity's
Russ Martin sunk a lay-up at the buzzer to give the Bantams the
lead, 35-33, at the half.
Trinity opened up with second half by scoring six quick points
only to be stopped by a three-point shot from Chris
Warren. Trinity then went on a scoring run
until Steve Segears (Lanham , MD / St. Johns
College HS) hit a lay-up followed by the extra point to close the
gap 56-51 at 13:34, which is the closest the Mustangs got to the
Bantams for the rest of the game. At 7:56, Jason
Lambert (Bloomfield , CT / Kingswood-Oxford) interrupted
Trinity's control of the game by sinking a free-throw and a
three-pointer back-to-back.
Trinity closed the game with one out of the three dunks they had
for the half. The final score was 93-74. Top scorers
for the Mustangs were Segears with 15 points,
followed by Williams and Lambert
both with 14 points.
With the loss the Mustangs fall 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the
NEAC. Villa is now preparing to host the Legg Mason
Tournament January 6-7. Their first game is against Lebanon
Valley at 6:00 pm.
