Matt Bruneteau enters his second season as the head men’s ice hockey coach at Stevenson University in 2026 after leading the Mustangs to a historic 2025-26 campaign. In his first season at the helm, Bruneteau guided Stevenson to the MAC Championship and was named the 2025-26 MAC Coach of the Year.
Bruneteau is no stranger to the Mustang program, previously serving as the program’s inaugural assistant coach beginning in 2016. During his time behind the bench, Stevenson captured the 2018 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and helped establish the foundation of the program’s early success.
“I am honored and grateful to take over the next chapter of Stevenson hockey,” said Bruneteau. “I would like to thank the committee for their professionalism and diligence in the process. I look forward to continuing building on the past success of the program.”
Under Bruneteau’s leadership, the Mustangs earned multiple major conference and national honors during the 2025-26 season. Jack Karlsson earned All-American honors while also being named the MAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, John Musella was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Bruneteau brings an extensive background as both a player and coach to Stevenson. As a student-athlete at Lake Superior State University from 2010-14, he served as team captain and appeared in 146 career games at the Division I level. Throughout his collegiate career, Bruneteau earned the Jim Howie Unsung Hero Award three times for his leadership and dedication to the program.
Following his collegiate career, Bruneteau played professionally in the ECHL with the Fort Wayne Komets and Greenville Swamp Rabbits. He also spent two seasons overseas with Étoile Noire de Strasbourg in France’s Ligue Magnus.
In addition to his time at Stevenson, Bruneteau served as an assistant coach at University of Alaska Anchorage from 2018-21. He has also spent the past four seasons coaching in the United States Hockey League and junior hockey ranks in various roles. Most recently, Bruneteau served as an assistant coach for the North Iowa Bulls of the North American Hockey League.
Away from the rink, Bruneteau has remained active in growing the game of hockey through youth clinics and community service initiatives.
A graduate of Lake Superior State in 2014, Bruneteau earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with minors in Psychology and Coaching.
