The Mustangs have experienced great success during his time on campus. During his tenure, Stevenson’s golf programs have won a total of eight MAC Conference championships and made eight appearances in the NCAA tournament. A great number of individual players have experienced success under Smith, as his student-athletes have earned five All-Region selections, five MAC Golfers of the Year, 41 All-MAC selections, 22 MAC Academic All-Conference award winners, and 22 Academic All-Americans.

In addition, he has worked with a recipient of the NCAA Elite 90 award, and the women’s program has been ranked in the Top 20 nationally in highest team GPA three times. Smith was also instrumental in the formation and development of the women's program, being involved with all trips to the NCAA tournament in the program's history.

Smith was a collegiate golfer at nearby McDaniel College. He fired a career low round of 68, which stood as the Centennial Conference record for lowest individual score for several years. He is a graduate of McDaniel, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2012 and master’s degree in 2014. He and his wife, Bridget, an assistant women’s basketball coach at Johns Hopkins University, live in Baltimore.
