Julia Culotta enters her eleventh season with the Mustangs in 2027
Culotta was named the fourth head coach in program history in September 2016 and has since guided the program through a sustained period of competitive success, academic excellence, and national recognition.
Under her leadership, the program achieved its first national ranking, appearing at No. 25 in the NFCA Poll in 2021, and recorded a season-opening split against No. 18 Randolph-Macon in 2020. Culotta’s teams have consistently posted strong results, including a 17–17 campaign in 2018 that nearly doubled the program’s win total from the prior season, followed by multiple double-digit win seasons highlighted by five shutouts in 2019 and a dominant 28-run shutout victory over Trinity (D.C.).
In 2022, Culotta’s pitching staff achieved a program milestone with two no-hitters, both thrown by Marissa Heuer, marking the first such feat since 2008. Her tenure has also produced numerous individual accolades, including NFCA All-Region selections, All-MAC Commonwealth honors across multiple seasons, and a 2024 NFCA Top Ten Academic Team ranking (5th nationally with a 3.72 GPA). In 2021, she was named MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year after leading a standout season that featured multiple all-conference selections and academic recognition.
Prior to becoming head coach, Culotta served as an assistant coach at UMBC from 2011–2016, where she helped develop 19 America East All-Conference selections and contributed to multiple conference championship appearances.
A standout student-athlete herself, she played four seasons at UMBC after beginning her collegiate career at the University of Tennessee. Culotta earned America East All-Conference honors as a senior, batting .384 with nine home runs, 33 RBIs, and 37 runs scored, and finished her career ranked among program leaders in several offensive categories. She served as team captain in 2011 and was a four-time America East Academic Honor Roll selection.
A native of Street, Maryland and graduate of North Harford High School, Culotta earned her bachelor’s degree in history and political science from UMBC in 2010.
