Smith is entering his 10th season at Stevenson as an assistant coach.
In 2018, Smith was named to the NABC/Under Armour 30 Under 30 team, recognizing the top up and coming coaches in college basketball.
The Mustangs have experienced great success during his time on campus. During his tenure, Stevenson has reached the postseason six times, including two trips to the MAC Conference championship game and two ECAC Championships. He has contributed to the program setting a school record in wins twice as well as multiple appearances in the national Top 25 poll. Overall, Smith has recruited 11 student-athletes who have been named All-Conference and numerous others who have won academic awards such as MAC Honor Roll and NABC Honors Court.
Prior to his time at Stevenson, Smith spent three seasons on staff at McDaniel College. Smith helped McDaniel to the postseason in 2012-13 for the first time in school history. During his time on staff, Smith, recruited, developed, and coached five student-athletes who went on to earn All-Centennial Conference honors. He also recruited the core of the classes of 2015 and 2016, who went on to be the two winningest classes in school history.
Smith is currently the Co-Director of the NABC/Reese’s Division I College All-Star Game. The game is held every year at the site of the Final Four, and features 20 of the top senior student-athletes in the country. He is in charge of player selection as well as coordinating the logistics and management of the event. During his time with the game, he has worked with over 30 players who ended up playing in the NBA.
He is also a consistent presence on the summer basketball circuit. Smith previously coached with Baltimore Nike Elite, one of the original Nike EYBL members, and Crusader Nation. In the summer of 2014, his Baltimore Elite team won the AAU National Championship at the AAU Gold Super Showcase. He has helped to develop many players who have gone on to have success at all levels, including current NBA players Immanuel Quickley (New York Knicks) and Haywood Highsmith (Miami Heat).
Smith is a graduate of McDaniel College, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2012 and master’s degree in 2014. He and his wife, Bridget, an assistant women’s basketball coach at Johns Hopkins University, live in Baltimore.
