Billy Gunther enters his twelfth season as a coach with the Mustangs, for the 2026 season.
Gunter continues a long-standing connection with the program that dates back to its inception in 2010. A former player turned coach, Gunther has played an integral role in the development and success of the team both on and off the field.
As a student-athlete, Gunther was a four-year member of the Mustangs and a mainstay on the offensive line, starting 41 consecutive games. A two-time All-Conference selection, he helped pave the way for a dominant rushing attack that produced 21 100-yard rushers, including three 200-yard performances. His efforts contributed to the Mustangs ranking second in the conference in fewest sacks allowed during the 2013 season, while also helping the team secure its first postseason victory in 2014 with an ECAC Bowl win over Bethany College.
Transitioning to the coaching staff in 2015, Gunther made an immediate impact in his first season as running backs coach. The Mustangs finished 9-2 and captured the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series title, rushing for over 1,700 yards and averaging 157.5 yards per game. Under his guidance, Devonte Williams delivered a record-breaking performance with 298 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a single game, earning MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors and a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week.
Gunther continued to build on that success in 2016, helping lead the Mustangs to a historic 9-2 season that included the program’s first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship and its first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III Football Championship. The team finished the season ranked 20th nationally and rushed for over 1,300 yards, averaging 126.2 yards per game. Williams again stood out with a 203-yard, two-touchdown performance against King’s (Pa.), while Jainard Crawley-Lambert added 516 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in just eight games, earning All-Conference honorable mention recognition.
A 2014 graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice, Gunther remains committed to his professional growth and is currently pursuing his master’s degree. His deep ties to the program, combined with his experience as both a player and coach, continue to make him a valuable asset to the Mustangs’ success.
