OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's soccer battled Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills East, but a second-half goal from the Eagles proved to be the difference as the Mustangs fell, 2-1.
The Mustangs generated an early opportunity in the third minute when Grace Fay put a shot on goal, but Mary Washington made the save. The Eagles responded with several chances of their own, forcing Stevenson goalkeeper Sophia Valenzano to make three saves over the opening 16 minutes.
Mary Washington broke through in the 32nd minute when they found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. Karly Sheahan looked for an answer just over two minutes later, but her attempt went wide as Stevenson entered halftime trailing by one.
Stevenson came out of the break on the attack. Nyla Behram put a shot on frame in the 47th minute before the Mustangs earned a corner kick moments later. Sheahan capitalized on the ensuing pressure, finding the back of the net at the 47:48 mark to level the match at 1-1.
The Eagles regained the lead in the 55th minute as they scored to put Mary Washington ahead, 2-1. Stevenson continued to push for another equalizer, with Sheahan placing shots on goal in both the 69th and 87th minutes, but the goalkeeper turned away both attempts to preserve the Eagles' advantage.
Sheahan led the Mustangs offensively with four shots, three on goal and Stevenson's lone goal. Behram and Fay each added a shot on goal. Valenzano and Isabella Serano split time in net, with each goalkeeper recording four saves.
The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Salisbury for a 4 p.m. game.
