Softball Sweeps Lancaster Bible as Maiorano Notches 100th Career Hit

Owings Mills, Md. (April 9) – The Stevenson Mustangs softball team showcased resilience and timely hitting in a thrilling non-conference doubleheader sweep of Lancaster Bible, earning a 7-5 comeback victory in game one—where Rebecca Maiorano recorded her 100th career hit—before walking off with a dramatic 10-9 win in game two.

Game 1:
Lancaster Bible struck first, plating single runs in each of the opening two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. The Mustangs responded in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to score three runs and take a 3-2 advantage. RBI contributions from Maria Morsa and Maiorano highlighted the inning, while Olivia Munoz drew a key walk to keep the rally alive.

The Chargers regained momentum in the fifth inning, using a string of hits to push across two runs and reclaim a 4-3 lead. Stevenson, however, delivered its decisive response in the sixth. After Sierra Williams led off with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game, the Mustangs continued to apply pressure. Morsa delivered again with a go-ahead single, and Maiorano broke the game open with a clutch two-RBI double to left field, giving Stevenson a 7-4 cushion.

Lancaster Bible added an unearned run in the seventh, but Stevenson held firm defensively to close out the 7-5 victory.

Anna Sexton (6-5) earned the win in the circle, going the distance while allowing five runs on 13 hits and striking out two.

Offensively, the Mustangs were led by Maiorano's three RBIs, while Williams and Sahara Ward each recorded multi-hit performances. Stevenson totaled 10 hits in the contest and used a balanced attack throughout the lineup to secure the win.

Game 2:
Stevenson wasted no time jumping ahead, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Ward and Morsa reached base, Ava Stafursky drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly before Williams delivered a two-RBI double to right center. Tessa Boswell followed with an RBI single to cap the early surge and give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead.

Lancaster Bible answered in a big way in the second inning, plating five runs to take a 5-4 advantage. The Mustangs quickly responded, tying the game in the bottom half of the inning as Stafursky came through again with an RBI single.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the fourth, where Stevenson regained control behind a clutch two-RBI single from Boswell to make it 7-5. Lancaster Bible would not go away, tying the game in the fifth and then taking a 9-7 lead in the sixth inning.

Facing a two-run deficit in their final at-bat, the Mustangs delivered under pressure. Mykaela Getz and Munoz reached to spark the rally before Ward singled to load the bases. Morsa drove in a run with a single to cut the deficit to one, and a bases-loaded walk to Maiorano tied the game at 9-9. Moments later, Stafursky came through in the clutch once again, delivering the walk-off RBI single to complete the comeback and secure the 10-9 victory.

Stafursky led the offense with three RBI, while Boswell added three RBI of her own. Morsa finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two walks, and Ward paced the lineup with three hits and three runs scored.

In the circle, Lilly Tinker (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings, while Madison Statuto closed the door to keep Stevenson within striking distance late in the game.

The Mustangs will return to action on Saturday, April 11, as they host Widener in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader in support of Military Appreciation. First pitches are scheduled for 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
