Owings Mills, Md. (March 31) — The Stevenson Mustangs delivered a dominant offensive performance in game one, 12-4 in 6 innings, before mounting a spirited late comeback in game two, 6-5, ultimately earning a split against non-conference Mary Washington.
Game 1:
Stevenson wasted no time setting the tone, striking for two runs in the opening frame.
Rebecca Maiorano got the Mustangs on the board with an RBI single, and
Emily Hamp followed with a run-scoring double to make it 2–0.
Mary Washington answered in the second inning with a two-run single to even the score, but the Mustangs quickly responded with a big inning of their own. Maiorano came through again with a two-RBI single to regain the lead, while
Ava Stafursky and Hamp each added RBI singles to cap a four-run second inning and push Stevenson ahead 6–2.
The Mustangs continued to apply pressure throughout the game. After Mary Washington trimmed the deficit to 6–3 in the third, Stevenson added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from
Maria Morsa. The offense broke things open in the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from
Olivia Munoz and another RBI knock from Morsa to extend the lead to 10–3.
Stevenson tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning, with
Tessa Boswell delivering an RBI single and
Mykaela Getz adding a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring at 12–4 under the mercy rule.
At the plate, the Mustangs tallied 14 hits, led by Maiorano's 2-for-3, three-RBI performance. Hamp also had a standout day, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Munoz contributed two hits and two RBI, including the key triple. Stafursky and Boswell each added multi-hit efforts in the balanced offensive attack.
In the circle,
Anna Sexton (4-4) earned the win, tossing a complete game while allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out three.
Game 2:
Both teams were held scoreless through the opening three innings as Stevenson starter
Ky Vaughn kept Mary Washington off balance early, while the Mustangs offense worked to find its rhythm at the plate. The visiting Eagles broke through first in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to take a 1–0 lead.
Stevenson answered in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together timely hits to take control.
Mykaela Getz and Munoz sparked the rally with back-to-back singles, before Morsa tied the game with an RBI groundout. Maiorano followed with an RBI single to give the Mustangs a 2–1 advantage.
Mary Washington responded in the sixth, capitalizing on a double and a Stevenson miscue to plate two runs and reclaim a 3–2 lead. The Eagles extended their advantage in the seventh inning, using three runs on a combination of sacrifice flies and defensive pressure to move ahead 6–2.
Refusing to back down, Stevenson mounted a late push in the bottom of the seventh. After putting runners on, Stafursky delivered an RBI single to cut into the deficit.
Sierra Williams came through in the clutch moments later, driving a two-run double to center field to bring the Mustangs within one at 6–5. Despite the rally, Stevenson was unable to complete the comeback.
Vaughn (1-1) went six innings in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) while striking out three.
Lilly Tinker added an inning of relief. Offensively, Maiorano led the way with three hits and an RBI, while Williams drove in two runs. Munoz and Getz each contributed key hits in the Mustangs' offensive effort.
Stevenson will return to action on Thursday, April 2, traveling to Eastern for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
