Mechanicsburg, Pa. (January 7) – In its first MAC Commonwealth contest of the season, the Stevenson women's basketball team put together a strong effort against Messiah but ultimately fell in the final quarter, 59–44, on the road.
After Messiah secured the opening points, the Falcons extended their early advantage with a 14–6 run. Stevenson responded when
Janiya Ennis attacked the lane and drew contact, converting a pair of free throws to spark the Mustangs. With 25 seconds remaining in the opening quarter,
Aliyah Jean-Jacques knocked down a jumper to cut the deficit, sending Stevenson into the second quarter trailing by four.
In the second 10-minute period, Stevenson carried its late first-quarter momentum forward, trading baskets with the Falcons and staying within striking distance. The Mustangs remained within four at the break, heading into halftime down 28–24.
Stevenson opened the third quarter strong, pulling within a single possession in the first two minutes after team-leading scorer
Anaya Price answered a Messiah jumper. Price continued to apply pressure, responding again with a three-pointer to keep the Mustangs within one. A late Falcon surge, however, gave Messiah a 43–38 edge heading into the final quarter.
Playing at home in its conference opener, Messiah capitalized in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to double digits midway through the period. Ennis converted a pair of free throws for Stevenson's final points of the night, as the Falcons closed out the game for a 59–44 victory.
Stevenson will remain on the road for its next contest, traveling to Alvernia for a 1:00 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match up on Saturday, January 10.
