Women's Basketball Shows Late Surge in Home Conference Loss to Alvernia

Owings Mills, Md. (January 31) – The Stevenson women's basketball team battled for four quarters on Saturday afternoon inside Owings Mills Gymnasium, showing resilience and late energy in a hard-fought MAC Commonwealth match up before falling to Alvernia, 61–50.

After the Golden Wolves struck first, Stevenson settled in defensively and found an early spark midway through the opening quarter. Tessa Boswell knocked down a three-pointer off a Richardson assist to even the score at 3–3, and moments later Anaya Price converted a fast-break jumper to keep the Mustangs within a possession. Stevenson continued to create opportunities off steals and second-chance chances, but Alvernia used a late run to take a 17–8 edge into the second.

The Mustangs responded with increased pressure to open the second quarter. Price attacked the lane for a pair of free throws and later added a mid-range jumper to cut into the deficit. Janiya Ennis followed with back-to-back baskets, including a strong finish through contact, while Elia Richardson added a second-chance score. Stevenson controlled the glass during stretches of the period and kept the margin manageable, heading into halftime trailing 32–20.

Out of the break, the Mustangs delivered their most connected stretch of the afternoon. Kalea Wynter opened the third with a bucket in the paint, and Ennis turned defense into offense with a steal that led to a score. Aliyah Jean-Jacques pushed the tempo in transition, converting a fast-break jumper to bring Stevenson within six and energize the home crowd. The Mustangs continued to string together stops, forcing turnovers and limiting clean looks to keep the game within reach entering the final frame.

Stevenson saved its best offensive output for the fourth quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field. Price and Ennis attacked the rim, while the bench provided key minutes to sustain the pressure. The Mustangs outscored Alvernia 19–14 in the period, showcasing their fight down the stretch and closing the contest with momentum, but with the 61-50 loss.

Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. when the Mustangs host Hood for National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
