REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Stevenson men's ice hockey team (9-5-0 overall, 8-2-0 MAC) earned a 7-3 victory over King's (Pa.) (2-12-1 overall, 2-8-1 MAC) on Friday evening.
Connor MacDonell opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 7:06 mark of the first period, assisted by Jack Costabile and Joshua Swan. The Monarchs responded six minutes later to even the contest, but Caden Smith regained the lead for the Mustangs at 16:18 with help from Carson Galin. King's answered once again to knot the game at 2-2 heading into the first intermission.
Stevenson took control in the second period, beginning with a power-play goal from Swan just 1:43 in, assisted by Matt Gough and Galin. Smith followed with his second goal of the night off assists from John Musella and Jack Karlsson. Five minutes later, Swan extended the Mustangs' lead with an unassisted shorthanded goal, and Smith completed the hat trick with under three minutes remaining, scoring off feeds from Greg Spitznagel and Musella to give Stevenson a 6-3 advantage.
King's added its third goal early in the third period at 4:19, but Jack Karlsson sealed the victory at 12:50 with a goal assisted by Day and Musella, closing out the 7-3 win.
The Mustangs dominated offensively, outshooting the Monarchs 53-25 and holding a 41-35 edge in faceoffs. Smith, Musella, and Swan each recorded three-point performances, while Galin and Karlsson added two points apiece. Five additional Mustangs registered a point, and Ford DeLoss made 22 saves in net.
Stevenson will conclude the weekend series against King's on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
