Mustangs blank Green Terror, Gators

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team started off the season on the right foot with two wins over their county neighbors on Saturday afternoon.

Earning 3-0 sweeps on both sides, the Mustangs blanked their neighbors to the north McDaniel in the opening match while dispatching their neighbors to the south in Notre Dame of Maryland University in the nightcap.

Notre Dame earned the split on the day, defeating the Green Terror (0-2) 3-1 in the middle match of the day.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20.

The Mustangs hit .283 in the opening match (50-16-120) including a .357 clip (21-6-42) in the second set.

Giulia Viglietta led the way with 14 kills, an ace and three blocks. Rachel Lenz had 11 kills, with Sydney Salazar getting ten.

Logan Burge also had three blocks in the opener, part of a team-high eight on the morning.

Declyn Tooze had 25 assists on the day, with Courtney Foose netting 13. Tooze had 12 digs defensively, with Lenz getting 11.

Stevenson 3, Notre Dame of Maryland 0
The Mustangs defeated the Gators 25-13, 25-19 and 25-19. The Mustangs held the Gators to a -.074 hitting percentage (19-26-95) in the nightcap.

It was a balanced attack in the second match, as Salazar and Burge each had seven kills, with Tooze getting three aces.

Burge had a match-high five blocks, with Tooze getting 20 assists.

Viglietta had nine digs with Lenz getting eight.

Stevenson travels to the west on Friday, taking on Centre and Otterbein Friday night, before taking on Capital and Hanover on Saturday in Ohio. The matches are a Homecoming celebration for Viglietta, who is from Columbus while teammate Maren Zepfel is from Westerville.
