OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's basketball team registered a 62-55 win over Alvernia in their season finale on Saturday afternoon. Before the game the squad took a moment to recognize their seniors,
Stephenae Lawrence,
Emori Jeselskis; and their support staff seniors, Asia Reeves, Chloe Seluchins, Colin Davis and Jaiheem Henderson. The team also took a moment to recognize Steve Jones, who has been the voice of Mustang Basketball since the 2011-12 season. Jones will be retiring as their season comes to an end this weekend.
Stephenae Lawrence put up the first basket for the Mustangs, Alvernia replied with four points, but Lawrence put up two free-throws to tie the game 4-4. The Golden Wolves and Mustangs battled till the end of the first with Stevenson leading 13-12.
Janiya Ennis opened the second period with five straight points for the Mustangs. Alvernia fought back to notch a 19-18 game, but
Nadia Ferguson and Ennis retaliated to put the Mustangs ahead 22-19. Both teams continued to duel, but it was Stevenson who walked into halftime with a 28-23 lead.
In the third quarter, both squads game out strong offensively as Stevenson put up 22 points, as Alvernia netted 18. Despite the Golden Wolves offensive efforts, Stevenson led at the end of the third quarter 50-41.
In the final quarter, the Mustangs opened a 10-point lead, with a driving lay-up from
Erin Dixon to post a 55-45 lead. Alvernia cut it down to a 57-54 game with under a minute and a half remaining. Ennis replied with two free-throws to make it a 59-54 game, Alvernia then put up a free-throw, but Ennis put up two more to slot the 61-55 lead. With 20 seconds on the clock,
Tessa Boswell threw up a crucial block to block a three-point attempt from the Golden Wolves, with
Destiny Towns coming up with the ball. Ferguson then put up one more free-throw to cap off the 62-55 win for the Mustangs.
Ennis led the squad with a 23-point night with seven rebounds and four assists. Ferguson followed with 10 points with four rebounds. Lawrence and Towns both had seven-point five-rebound games, as Boswell led the squad with three blocks.
Stevenson concludes the season 9-16 overall, and 4-10 in MAC Commonwealth play.
