Men’s Hockey dominates Alvernia in 9-4 home victory

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson Men's Hockey hosted Alvernia University this afternoon for their third and final meeting of the regular season. The Mustangs set the tone early, scoring within the first two minutes of the match and continuing their onslaught throughout the remainder of the game for a 9-4 final.

In his first shift of the game, senior Dylan Florit found the back of the net at the minute-40 mark, citing an assist from classmate Kyle Lightfoot.

Though Alvernia returned the favor two minutes later, Stevenson stepped on the gas for two goals to round out the period. Senior Graeme McCrory scored off of a redirected shot from classmate Nick Dineen, then junior Jack Karlsson scored via classmate Aidan McDowell and first year Greg Spitznagel.

To start the second, Aidan McDowell switched spots on the scoresheet with Karlsson, notching a power-play goal via Karlsson and senior Liam McCanney. Alvernia would cut the goal deficit in half shortly after.

Graeme McCrory recorded the Mustangs' second power-play goal at the halfway point of the second with assists going to Florit and McDowell. After McCrory, McCanney netted his first of the day on yet another Stevenson power-play, earning Florit and Karlsson assists on the play once again.

Before the middle period expired, first year Aiden Lindley and junior Blake Benson would extend the Mustangs' lead to 8-2. Earning assists on Lindley's goal were senior Nick Dineen and junior Connor MacDonell, while Benson's goal started with a stretch pass from first year goaltender Jake Hugessen.

Alvernia scored twice in the third, but Liam McCanney scored in a shorthanded solo effort between the Golden Wolves' goals.

Aidan McDowell, Jack Karlsson, Dylan Florit, and Liam McCanney each recorded a game-high three points in today's contest. McCanney and McCrory led the Mustangs with two goals apiece.

Florit also won a game-best 13 draws in the circle, followed by junior John Musella with ten victories.

In net, Jake Hugessen made 24 stops to earn the win.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 14-7-2 overall and 11-6-2 in MAC play. They look to complete the weekend sweep tomorrow evening when they host Lebanon Valley.
