Elizabethtown, Pa. (November 8) – The Stevenson women's volleyball team split its Saturday tri-match at Thompson Gymnasium, opening the day with a dominant sweep over Rutgers-Newark (25-19, 25-14, 25-15) before falling in four sets to host Elizabethtown (24-26, 25-16, 15-25, 21-25).
Vs. Rutgers-Newark
Set 1:
The Mustangs overcame a slow start after trailing 5–0 early, rallying behind key kills from
Rachel Lenz and
Sydney Salazar to take the lead midway through the frame.
Lillianna Hornickle sparked a late surge with back-to-back service aces, while Lenz tallied four kills in the opening set to help Stevenson take it, 25–19.
Set 2:
Stevenson built momentum quickly in the second, using strong serving to break the frame open. Lenz continued to pace the offense, adding several more kills, while
Giulia Viglietta and
Maren Zepfel combined for timely blocks at the net. The Mustangs' serve receive remained solid as the team limited errors en route to a 25–14 win.
Set 3:
The Mustangs closed out the sweep with efficient hitting, posting a .208 attack percentage. Lenz finished the match with a team-high nine kills and seven service aces, while
Courtney Foose dished out nine assists and added nine digs. Viglietta and Hornickle chipped in three kills apiece, and
Logan Burge tallied a pair of blocks to secure the 25–15 final.
Vs. Elizabethtown
Set 1:
A tightly contested opener featured long rallies and multiple lead changes. Stevenson held a late 23–22 advantage before Elizabethtown closed on a 4–1 run to edge out a 26–24 win. Lenz and
Sydney Salazar led the way offensively in the frame.
Set 2:
The Mustangs responded with their most complete set of the afternoon. Stevenson hit .286 as a team, with Lenz and
Giulia Viglietta combining for eight kills.
Declyn Tooze directed the offense efficiently, while Hornickle added a service ace during a 7–0 Mustang run. Stevenson evened the match with a convincing 25–16 victory.
Set 3:
Momentum shifted back to the Blue Jays in the third, as Elizabethtown capitalized on Mustang attack errors to take control early. Despite solid defensive play from
Isabella Terra and
Allison Gaus, the Mustangs couldn't close the gap, falling 25–15.
Set 4:
The Mustangs battled throughout the final set but couldn't overcome a late Elizabethtown push. Viglietta and Lenz each reached double-digit kills, and Foose distributed 15 assists, while Stevenson finished with nine team blocks. However, the Blue Jays closed the match 25–21 to seal the win.
Stevenson will now turn its attention to the postseason as the No. 2 Mustangs are set to host No. 3 Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals on Wednesday, November 12, at 7 p.m.
